Hmmm sounds interesting. Will have to see the app and how it works before a proper judgement though

"you’ll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby."
That would mean that you couldn't play online AT ALL without the app running, whether you're home or on the road. That's just retarded beyond belief... So if you don't have android or an iphone, you can't play online on the Switch, period.
No wonder they didn't go into detail about how online works.

So to make it clear, when you play online with someone, it's always router-to-router, or console-to-console in a way. But...
Matchmaking is when they (Nintendo servers) search for people to play in a game together. A lobby is where those people wait before the game starts and after it ends.
So if the app handles the lobbies and matchmaking (the things you need Nintendo's servers for), you can't play online without it.

It's almost like they don't want to be culpable for kiddies hearing bad language over voice chat. "It were on the smartphone, not the Switch, nout to do with us!". I don't know what to make of it all. Doesn't sound that elegant to me. I hope the app can run fine in the background or with screen turned off. Just an extra thing to connect and fuck about with when I just want a quick game of MK or whatever.

They are NOT going to drain my battery, and I am NOT going to pay them for having to use my phone to play games, on a console..
Seriously, what the hell are they smoking over at the HQ?! I hope they come to their senses before they force the application to the users. You can play MK8 "deluxe" online without the app at launch, right? So there's still hope I'd think.
But for me, it would be a 380€ offline console without a proper D-pad.
P.S. If the app doesn't drain your phone dry, the constant wireless between it and the Switch will.

Hopefully that's just an option. Like if you were on the go you can use the app, but yeah having to use the app while at home is not convenient at all. You gotta bust out your phone while gaming on your couch, just really isn't adding up

It has to be Joe. Needing a second device for online play... Oh man. But the problem is, they're not clear about it. They haven't said anything about accounts, VC, and their wording has been so that the app is mandatory. Maybe they shouldn't let people who don't understand how online works do the talking (Reggie!). Matchmaking and lobbies on the app would indeed mean that you can't play online without it.

OMFG... It's mandatory. Reason? Paid online is an afterthought, or they've overlooked something in development.
They need the app to verify you have a valid subscription, and somehow the Switch doesn't have the capability. Are they making the subscription user based, and you can't share online play with multiple users (me, wife, and two boys in my case)?
Remember? They haven't said anything about accounts, and how they work.. There's no miiverse, so it's possible there will be a new account system, and our NNID's are invalid.
It's a mess. The console is out in few weeks, and all we know is that there's a Fire Emblem game in the works for 2018...

That's a bit harsh Harri, there's a new Xenoblade coming too!! I loved XCX. I mean, it'll never hit the 2017 release its slated for and nobody else will care but I'll be keeping my eye out for that!

Xenoblade Chronicles is my alltime favourite videogame now andyu.. Xenoblade Chronicles 2, with composers from the original onboard, was the biggest reveal of the presentation for me. Doesn't change the fact that their online approach with the app is retarded in my opinion, and it sure isn't convenient.
