Did he have access to the full game or 3 chapters? I know when I played Injustice 2 free trial they let me play 3 chapters before stopping.
I've had that happen to me with Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands and Doom free trials. Like you said, you download the full game for a limited time, but end date comes and you still have access to it. Wildlands let me have access to it for about a week longer I think before they finally gave me a notice that it had ended and i'm not sure how Doom would have lasted as I ended up deleting that not soon after.
